What do all these terms mean?

Text: They all refer to a growing movement in the United States in which people are trying to live in a way that reduces or mitigates harm to the environment.

Text: Over the years, studies have shed light on some alarming trends: global temperatures are rising, natural resources are being used up, and our oceans, air and lands are becoming polluted.

Text: These findings have led to a greater awareness of how we, as human beings, are having a negative impact on our environment.

Text: For example, most cars use gasoline and release exhaust that pollutes the air and contributes to global climate change.

Text: Unless you shop for organic produce, you are also contributing to the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers that farmers use to grow crops. These pesticides and fertilizers can get into the soil and water supply and negatively affect animal and plant life.

Text: And when you throw away trash, it generally ends up in landfills. The environment can be damaged in many ways from landfills. One example is landfill contamination, which occurs when chemicals seep from the landfill into groundwater that is used for drinking water.

Text: But things are changing. People are learning to be more eco-friendly in order to help the environment. For instance, you could ride a bike to the store instead of driving a car.

Text: You could buy fruit that was grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
